Mage Pet Raid Etiquette!
This is designed to be a basic guide on the etiquette of controlling your pet during raids. I will not be going into strategy or spell line ups, simply the do's and don'ts for pet choice, abilities and spells.
Before the checklist, I would like to point out that the pet is an extension of yourself. It has just as much potential for wiping a raid as you do, if not more, due to the MARVELOUS pet mechanics that SoE has bestowed upon all of us. Some of such mechanics are, inconsistent aggro spikes, a more significant proximity aggro modifier, and whenever a player moves into melee range of the mob the pet is tanking, the mob will automatically switch targets to the highest player on the aggro list. This means, that if you do not listen to this guide, when your pet taunts the mob and gets put towards the top of the aggro list, then the warrior who is tanking it falls, that mob is going to wreck your pet, then run to the 2nd highest aggro. Sometimes that's an off tank, sometimes a cleric. Point is, it can easily wipe the raid. Let's not forget pathing that is to DIE for (literally) and the wondrous pets attacking corpses because the mob dot'd you an hour ago.
This guide is designed to get all of your settings for your pet set correctly to maximize your control of the pet and to limit it's ability to think for itself.
Now, on to the checklist, these should all be things that you consider before each and every raid, bar none. Oh, and it might be a good idea for everyone to make an "/assist /pet attack" single button for raids. You can even tie that into your spell rotation so that way you are always assisting and your pet will be constantly receiving new assist orders.
PET TYPES
1.) Earth pet - Tank pet. Obviously, but more than that. For (very few) raids it can be the main tank, but more commonly will be supplemental DPS with a potential for saving a caster and picking up a lose mob who is already summoning.
2.) Water pet - "DPS" pet. More than likely the most effective pet to have on raids, mitigation is lacking but if the raid is going smoothly that should not be a concern.
3.) Air pet - Pseudo tank pet. This pet will take a bit more punishment than the Water pet but will lack the Water pet's DPS. However it is graced with a stun proc making it a favorite among most raiders.
4.) Fire pet - Horribad pet that should have never been created. This pet will almost never be used and if it is, it will likely be due to a mechanic that we all loathe and wish was never in the game.
PET ABILITIES
1.) "Pet Hold" "Greater Pet Hold" ON. If you do not have these, you should not be in raid until you've learned your class.
2.) "Spell Hold" ON if using an Earth pet, "Spell Hold" OFF if you are using a Water or Air pet. If you are using a Fire pet and you were not specifically asked to do so, again you should not be in raid until you've learned your class.
3.) "Pet Taunt" OFF in any situation unless specifically directed otherwise.
4.) "Pet Focus" ON in all situations, this will keep your pet from losing sight of our absolute victory.
PET GEAR
Weapons - Mages are gifted with several sets of weapons. Each set has its own place in the world. However, one set that absolutely, positively, NEVER gets used during a raid is the "Frightforged Rageswords" (Aggro weapons). An active pet with those weapons equipped can bounce aggro of the mobs around like you wouldn't believe. Have a heart, save a cleric, take those #@!$%%! weapons off. Apart from that you should be using only the damage weapons, and preferably the ones that coordinate with the current raid we are doing. Say we are doing an ice dragon, I wouldn't be using frost sabers, but maybe flame swords? If you don't know what type of mobs we will be fighting, don't use them or use the aggro reducer weapons as either option will be fine.
Armor - Try and remember to be proactive about asking pet classes if they need any gear. It doesn't amount to much on one pet, but when you have 30 pets all dual wielding proc weapons, that can amount to a substantial amount of DPS.
Again, this was not meant to be the end all be all for pet class aggro forums, just a most basic guide to the etiquette of raiding with a pet as a mage. As long as you follow these rules you should not have any problem controlling your pet for the duration of any of our raids.
If anyone has any questions or can think of anything that I missed without going into too much detail PM me or shoot me a tell in game!
